Unilever and Google Cloud are partnering to raise sustainable sourcing standards for palm oil suppliers by combining cloud computing with satellite imagery and AI.

What is palm oil anyway?

Palm oil is said to have been responsible for 8% of the world’s deforestation between 1990 and 2008. Knowing this, many companies around the globe are committing to making palm oil production less ecologically damaging.

You might ask: why not just stop using palm oil altogether? The answer isn’t that simple. Palm oil is in so many of the products we put in and on our bodies daily, and just because a product contains palm oil doesn’t mean it’s contributing to ecological destruction.

Many companies have made the switch to using only palm oil that is certified sustainable by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), which was founded in 2004.
