Understanding and caring for textured hair can feel like embarking on a journey through a maze of products and advice. Whether you have coils, curls, or waves, the right ingredients can make all the difference in maintaining healthy, vibrant hair.
What is textured hair?
Textured hair is any hair that has strands with a particular shape. This shape is also called a curl pattern. Your curl pattern is identified by the shape that the strands of hair make – kinky, coily, wavy, or curly hair. Your curl type is determined by the shape of the follicle that your hair grows out of from your scalp. The flatter or more oval-shaped the follicle, the curlier your hair. The more circular the cross-section, the straighter your hair.
The unique pattern of textured hair is especially noticeable in kinky, coily, wavy, or curly hair. Below is a chart showing curl patterns in textured hair:

Most people with textured hair have more than one type of pattern on their head, and may have a combination of, say, kinky, coily, wavy, and curly. Identifying your curl shape and pattern(s) is best determined while your hair is sopping wet.
How to identify your hair type
Type 1s are straight, Type 2s are wavy, Type 3s are curly, and Type 4s are coily.
The sub-classifications of A to C are based on the width or diameter of your wave, curl, or coil. Type As have a wider pattern size, Type Bs medium, and Type Cs the smallest of the three. Identifying your hair type gives you a better understanding of how to care for your texture, as well as knowing what types of ingredients you should look for in your hair products that are most beneficial in caring for your hair.
Hair care ingredients
You should always be aware of the ingredients in your hair products and know their specific purpose and effects. But this is especially true if your goal is to hydrate and moisturize curls, as some common ingredients can cause severe dryness. This includes staying away from parabens, sulfates, and synthetic colors.
Instead, look for natural, moisture-enhancing ingredients like coconut oil, sunflower oil, shea butter and cocoa butter. Humectants like glycerin and honey attract moisture from the air into the hair. Also, natural oils such as coconut oil, argan oil and jojoba oil help seal in moisture, keeping hair hydrated for longer. Plus, butters like shea butter and cocoa butter are excellent for locking in moisture and providing nourishment too. Small amounts of hydrolyzed proteins can also help strengthen the hair, reducing moisture loss.
